Fast 2D-Gray Probe
Compared with 2D-Mono (Black and White) optical array probes, the additional two gray levels provide enhanced detail of ice crystals, the ability to better re-size out-of-focus water drops and delete out-of-focus that break up at the edge of the depth of field (DOF). The figure below shows examples of laboratory images of drops imaged by 2D-Mono and 2D-Gray probes as the drops move away from the object plane (i.e., move progressively away from the best focus).
The 2D-Probe has been test-flown on the SPEC Learjet in mixed-phase clouds and compared with other SPEC cloud probes.
